Stages of Typical Labor & Delivery

Because labor and delivery are physically demanding and stressful for your pet, understanding what typically occurs can help you identify if there is a true emergency. If in doubt about whether a pet labor emergency is happening, don’t hesitate to contact our practice for advice on whether to bring your pet in. Normal labor and delivery happens in three stages, with the mother fluctuating between stages two and three until all the puppies or kittens are delivered:

Stage One: The mother becomes restless or anxious and begins nesting. Her body temperature also drops. This stage can last up to 36 hours, but usually only lasts 6-12 hours.

Stage Two: Also called the hard labor stage, this is when puppies/kittens are born. Due to the hormones produced during this stage, your pet should not be in significant distress or pain. Once contractions begin, the first puppy/kitten should be born within 1-2 hours.

Stage Three: After the puppy/kitten is delivered, the placentas are delivered. It is not abnormal for several puppies and then several placentas to be delivered. While the number of placentas should match the number of puppies/kittens, it’s not uncommon for the mother to eat the placentas. If the numbers do not align, you should keep watch for complications related to a retained placenta.

Signs of a Reproductive Emergency

Trouble giving birth, also known as dystocia, is a serious pet labor emergency that requires immediate medical attention to save both the mother and the puppies or kittens’ lives. Certain breeds are more prone to pet labor emergencies, and your primary vet can also help you prepare for potential complications and understand what to look out for. Some significant signs that indicate you should immediately visit our practice include:

  • The mother goes into labor significantly earlier than expected
  • 30-60 minutes of strong contractions without a birth
  • No puppies/kittens within 24-36 hours of the mother’s temperature dropping
  • The mother seems exhausted or is in extreme pain
  • A fetus is stuck in the birth canal
  • After birth, the mother is neglecting the puppies/kittens

What to Expect From Our Services

When you first bring your pet into our emergency hospital, we will triage them to determine the severity of the situation. We will work quickly to stabilize your pet’s condition while diagnosing the issue and creating a plan of action. If necessary, our veterinarian can perform a c-section. This is more common for certain breeds, such as French Bulldogs, or when the father is larger than the mother, but it can also happen if the mother is exhausted, in severe pain, or has not given birth despite strong contractions.

After the puppies or kittens are born, we can offer pediatric care. Whether the puppies or kittens are premature, sick, or otherwise need extra care, our veterinarian has the skills to support them in their first phase of life. We also provide guidance on what to look out for as the puppies or kittens grow and the mother feeds them, such as signs of mastitis (mammary gland infection) and eclampsia (inadequate nutrition leading to severely low calcium levels).

To support the continued health of the mom and puppies or kittens, we recommend following up with your primary vet. However, should another emergency come up as the puppies or kittens develop and the mom recovers, our practice will be here for you.
